Mark Carney has travelled to Europe looking to build Canada-EU links on defence, trade and commerce, and the movement of people.

He is heading to France and will attend the European Union State of address.

According to sources, he has suggested making Canada an associated partner of the European Union.

Carney stated visa requirements and a possibility of visa-free travel will feature in the discussions.

Some commentators note the European Union's favourable view of Carney is no guarantee of easier trade agreements.

They also say a deeper partnership could carry drawbacks for Canada.
